The CREATE! class was amazing. Joanne creates an incredibly safe space in which to challenge ourselves in our writings. The prompts were amazing and the CREATE! book is super helpful. Joanne is respectful and positive in her feedback. She has a good ear for the writing and helping people see the power in what they wrote. We did the class on Zoom because of the pandemic. Joanne was still able to help us all feel safe and seen. The book has great tools for moving past obstacles or barriers. I was amazed at the impact this class had on me in 5 short weeks. I am a visual artist; writing has always been hard for me. Joanne assured me that I could choose to paint rather than write for her CREATE! online workshop. What a surprise that once in the group I decided to use the CREATE! process to try writing instead of painting!
I felt safe in the process, which consists of clearly delineated steps, including meditation/relaxation, a clear intention for each piece and (best of all) a time limit for the writing. Post writing we were offered the oportuity to read our writing aloud. Joanne is a loving and gifted teacher. I felt safe, not only trying something new and uncomfortable, but also to dare reading my writing aloud. It is a bit scary to read aloud something that I haven't first read over to myself.
But it turned out to be such a gift. I heard the words freshly, as if for the first time, because others were listening. I was repeatedly surprised by their power and coherance. Joanne listened deeply and responded with insightful reflection which helped me deepen further into the process of revelation. Something magical happened doing this writing process with others. In spite of each of us having different intentions, synchronous themes emerged, making the whole all the more profound. I highly reccomend this workshop!

ABOUT the CREATE! Process
The famous depth psychologist, Carl Jung, found ways through meditation to access the imaginal realm. We, too, use short meditations to enable participants to drop into the deeper realms of consciousness — what Jung called the subconscious and collective unconscious. We now believe that the CREATE! process activates all four brain waves patterns at once — beta (thinking mind), alpha (meditative mind), theta (dreaming mind) and delta (deep collective unconscious realm). By having access to all four patterns at once, we are able to bring material up from the sub/unconscious while fully awake and record it through writing, visual art, dance, music, etc.
Many CREATE!ors have used this process to write books: memoirs, Ph.D. theses, novels, how-to’s. It’s a universal process that once learned can be applied in many disciplines. One of my early collaborators used CREATE! to write a memoir in her grandmother’s voice, as well as to write countless poems and several novels. It can be used on a daily basis as a way to process shadow material (both dark and golden) or directed toward accomplishment of a particular project (like writing a book or my recent experience creating a card deck with poetry on one side and visual collage on the other).
Learning and using CREATE! In a group has the added benefit of brain wave and heart rhythm entrainment where our individual capacity and experience is amplified by the transmission of the others present. We learn to access the awakened mind state more quickly and easily in a group of committed people. Group members receive insight from other’s pieces, as well as their own. The power of mutuality — the recognition that we’re all in this together — becomes very real and very concrete.
